DP World Marine Services adds UAE coastal service

DP World has introduced a new coastal service for the UAE, connecting its Jebel Ali hub to other ports around the country, and supporting key customers by easing supply chain bottlenecks. The inaugural shipment of roughly 200 TEUs sailed from the Jebel Ali Port to the Port of Ajman and arrived on-time on 7 October 2022. The new routes are serviced by a fleet of modified Multi-Carrying Vessels (MCV) to bypass congestion by calling smaller berths. The shallow draft vessels use less space and can access areas of ports, where larger ships cannot fit due to their size and length and can turn around at least twice as fast as larger vessels on short sea routes. This is particularly useful when connecting UAE coastal feeder ports with hub ports. The addition of marine services to the UAE’s 700-km Arabian Gulf coastline gives customers more efficient access to Jebel Ali Port, and potentially cuts transit times by days. Initial shipments will focus on moving food imports into the UAE with its reefer capabilities and moving commodities such as cement, out of it. The multi-modal offering means export customers benefit from seamless, last-mile delivery once cargo arrives at its destination port. Moving additional volumes By moving additional volumes of containerised cargo between Jebel Ali and other ports in the UAE, DP World will connect customers and main line carriers to an integrated ecosystem at the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), which connects to more than 150 ports worldwide and serves more than 3.5 billion people globally. “We’ve created this new coastal service to better support our customers in the UAE region and mitigate the rapidly increasing costs of trade. Our hope is that our customers can enjoy a more seamless and sustainable solution along the coast of the UAE, as well as secure better access to our global hub, Jebel Ali,” said Jesper Kristensen, Group Chief Operating Officer, Marine Services at DP World. Maritime solutions DP World created its Marine Services combining its maritime solutions and feeding expertise DP World created its Marine Services combining its maritime solutions and feedering expertise from its marine businesses including Unifeeder and P&O Maritime Logistics, to support key customers with supply challenges and relieve their stretched supply chains. The service starts with 2-3 calls per week, with a focus on connecting the UAE to the wider Middle East, Africa, the Indian Subcontinent and the Far East. For the next phase of development, DP World will deploy additional MCVs and add more port calls along the UAE coast. The focal point will remain the Port of Jebel Ali, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the port and the trade capability of the UAE at large.

P&O Maritime Logistics expands its cargo transport service with new contract for containerised cargo transport across the Red Sea

P&O Maritime Logistics will help debottleneck customer supply chains by ensuring there is a faster cargo turnaround, enabled by the company’s unique and recently modified Multi Carrying Vessels (MCVs) that can carry containerised cargo. In partnership with Unifeeder, P&O Maritime Logistics will increase connectivity across the Red Sea between the Port of Jeddah and Port Sudan. MCV line As a “micro” feeder, the new MCV line has the unique ability to bypass congestion. The shallow draft MCVs utilise less space and can access areas of the port where larger ships cannot fit due to their size and length. This is useful when connecting feeder ports, such as Port Sudan, with hub ports, such as Port of Jeddah. Using MCVs can advance and bring additional volumes for mainline carriers and reduce waiting times. P&O Maritime Logistics began modifying MCVs following the successful trials with the Topaz Lena, where they found they could deliver faster turnaround times to their customers with their cargo, demonstrating agility during industry-wide changes and bringing forward innovative solutions for their customers. In this case, the port turnaround time can be reduced by 70-80%. Highlights of the new liner service  Two of P&O Maritime Logistics’ recently modified MCVs, the Topaz Lena and the Topaz Volga, have been contracted P&O’s ships first crossed the Red Sea in 1842 after winning the Mail Contract from the UK to India, carrying mail, passengers, and precious cargo. The new liner service highlights P&O Maritime Logistics’ return to the Red Sea after 180 years and its expansion into the container carrying market as it is the first time the company crosses the Red Sea carrying containers. Two of P&O Maritime Logistics’ recently modified MCVs, the Topaz Lena and the Topaz Volga, have been contracted for the new route and work has already started for both vessels. Faster service  By connecting Port of Jeddah, a key port between Europe and Asia, and Port Sudan, P&O Maritime Logistics delivers a faster-than-anticipated service to Unifeeder, DP World, and other customers by offering a liner route between the terminals helping to reduce port congestion. The MCVs call at different terminals at both Jeddah and Port Sudan, underlining the possibility to export this solution to other port combinations worldwide. Efficiency Martin Helweg, CEO of P&O Maritime Logistics said, “P&O Maritime Logistics provides additional capacity and alleviates the already-stretched global supply chains. This is particularly useful on lower-volume, higher-frequency trade routes, such as the Red Sea, where our MCVs can provide a more efficient service to our clients." "Seeing such niche feeders operating successfully forms a blueprint for further expansion with new and existing clients.” The new contract also marks another milestone for Unifeeder’s continued close collaboration between the two maritime companies, following previous successful contracts in Europe. Multimodal and end-to-end solutions provider The businesses can create new routes, modify ships and expand offerings to better serve the customers Helweg continued, “As we continue to work closely with our parent company, DP World, on expanding our containerised service, our partnership with Unifeeder, also a DP World company, is an example of our ongoing efforts to respond and adapt to wider industry changes.” The collaboration between P&O Maritime Logistics and Unifeeder demonstrates DP World’s position as a truly multimodal and end-to-end solutions provider. The businesses can create new routes, modify ships and expand offerings to better serve the customers and help them combat logistical challenges. Modified MCV fleet Hui Khoon, COO, Network of Unifeeder FZCO, said, “Our new service with P&O Maritime Logistics marks our next expansion outside of Europe, and we are looking forward to growing our business in Africa and the Middle East. With continued growth in the containerised cargo business across the Red Sea, the new service will capitalise on the market opportunities.” “Having worked together in Europe, we are familiar with P&O Maritime Logistics’ expertise and their modified MCV fleet will be particularly helpful in streamlining our operations.” P&O Maritime Logistics is modifying a further two vessels and could have as many as ten modified upon request. The company will also leverage the container-modified MCVs with other partners worldwide.
