ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the Spray form insulation system used in IMO Type B tanks designed for LNG and Ammonia Fuel. This system has been developed by Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Hankuk Carbon Co., Ltd., demonstrating its viability in terms of both regulatory adherence and safety standards.
The maritime industry's shift towards decarbonisation has heightened the focus on developing vessels that use alternative fuels, such as LNG and ammonia. While IMO Type C tanks have been traditionally favoured for LNG-fuelled ships due to their cost-efficiency and productivity, IMO Type B tanks are now emerging as a preferred choice for large-capacity fuel tanks required by substantial container ships and ammonia-powered vessels. This preference is driven by their enhanced cargo efficiency and outfitting flexibility.
Alternative-Fuel Vessels
ClassNK performed a thorough safety review of the Spray form insulation system's design and the results from its demonstration mock-up test.
This review was conducted in accordance with the organisation's 'Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships', particularly part N, which includes the IGC Code, and part GF, which encompasses the IGF Code.
Following the confirmation of compliance with these requirements, the AiP was issued. ClassNK reaffirms its commitment to support advanced decarbonisation initiatives through ongoing safety assessments and related activities.
