The Minister of State for Defence Procurement, Jeremy Quin MP, took time to visit Cammell Laird’s stand aboard HMS Prince of Wales on Monday.

Britain’s newest aircraft carrier was hosting a UKNEST industry event to celebrate UK engineering excellence as part of the ship’s week-long visit to Liverpool. The day was aimed at highlighting the engineering achievement and national endeavours of those that contributed to the delivery of the Queen Elizabeth-class carrier programme.

Demonstration of the Naval Service

The event aboard HMS Prince of Wales was a celebration of the UK's engineering excellence

HMS Prince of Wales sailed up the Mersey last Friday in a demonstration of the Naval Service’s close ties with the city of Liverpool. She is affiliated with both Liverpool and Bristol, while her sister ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, is affiliated with London and Edinburgh. Liverpool is the only affiliated city that can be accessed by a carrier.

WW2 battleship

Cammell Laird also took the opportunity this week to officially present the Ship’s Company with a special replica ship’s bell.

It is an exact copy of the one lost and since recovered from HMS Prince of Wales’ namesake – a WW2 battleship – which sank off the coast of present-day Malaysia in 1941. Discover more about how the new Prince of Wales bell was made.
