EU ETS expands to include the shipping industry in 2024

The EU’s Emission Trading System, EU ETS, is a policy instrument for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The system is based on the fact that companies that emit greenhouse gases must hold emission rights to cover their emissions. Emission rights are a limited resource that is sold on a market. Companies covered by the EU ETS must report their emissions to the authorities. Emission rights are an important part of the EU’s climate policy and the system has contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the EU by around 40% since 2005. The EU ETS covers all member states, as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. From 2024, the shipping industry is also covered. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions From 2027, there is a principle decision that ships with a gross tonnage under 5,000 gross tons will be covered by the EU ETS. Until 2027 vessels below 5000 brutto ton is excluded from the EU ETS. In November the shipping company SUN Line Shipping introduced a brand new Rotterdam ˗ Stockholm ˗ Hull container service route. This means that Stockholm Norvik Port now has two new destination connections, further strengthening the port’s status as an important logistics hub in the Greater Stockholm area. The new Rotterdam ˗ Stockholm ˗ Hull container service route was inaugurated on 11th November. Shipping company SUN Line Shipping, a subsidiary of ThorSvecon Group AB (TSG AB), has increased its fleet and has introduced the container ship Perseus on the route. The vessel has a 660 TEU cargo capacity and will sail to and from Stockholm Norvik Port one day each week. Important logistics hub “We have seen a continuous increase in demand from freight owners wanting to transport goods between Sweden, the Netherlands, and England, and now the time is right. Stockholm Norvik Port is a new RoRo and container port with the best possible location in the Baltic Sea. TSG AB expands fleet for Stockholm to Rotterdam route

As of 8 November 2022, TSG AB is expanding its fleet with an additional vessel on the Baltic and North Sea. The vessel will be deployed on the Stockholm/Norvik – Hull - Rotterdam route. TSG AB's subsidiary SUN Line is investing in strengthening its service and is adding a vessel to the Stockholm/Norvik-Hull-Rotterdam route from 8 November 2022. Demand from freight buyers TSG already has the vessels Alrek, Frej and Odin calling at Västerås – Amsterdam - Hull The company has seen a continuous increase in demand from freight buyers who want to transport goods by sea between Sweden, the Netherlands and England.
