Kongsberg Digital (Kongsberg) and Shell International Exploration & Production (Shell Marine) have announced that they have entered into a strategic partnership agreement. Hege Skryseth, President of Kongsberg Digital and Executive Vice President (EVP) at Kongsberg, said “We are very excited to enter into this new strategic partnership agreement with Shell International and enable the digital transformation of their Wells business unit.” Digital transformation Hege Skryseth adds, “We believe the partnership approach is a significant reason why we have successfully created tools for digital transformation that work for our customers, and that have broad application, across the industries they are in. We already have a strong relationship with Shell on energy production and look forward to replicating that model, to enable transformation of another segment.” Kongsberg Digital has, during the previous few years, put together a substantial digital roadmap for oil and gas companies, supporting digitalisation within the industry. This strategy has been founded on agile methodologies, open ecosystems, data integration and people-centric solutions. Shell deploys Kongsberg’s real-time data products Shell has utilised Kongsberg Digital’s real-time data products in its global wells portfolio for several year Shell has utilised Kongsberg Digital’s real-time data products in its global wells portfolio for several years. Now, they are undertaking a digital transformation of their wells business, with a strong need for digital solutions. Jon Crane, the Vice President of Wells Digital in Shell International, said “Shell and Kongsberg both have a long proven track record of innovations, over 100 years. We are excited to formalise our collaboration on the next generation projects in Wells IoT and Shells’ wider digital transformation.” Jon Crane adds, “Advances in cloud technology, ML delivery and visualisation techniques open up opportunities to improve operational safety and decision making. This will position both companies at the forefront of drilling and Wells’ digital journey.” Kongsberg Digital – Shell partnership agreement The agreement is to align initiatives, across the overall life cycle for Wells’ deliveries, through planning, execution and reporting, by shared visibility into each other’s roadmap, and to increase the creation of market-driven applications. The strategic partnership agreement was signed in June 2021.
The twin solution from Kongsberg Digital will reimagine the ways of working at Shell and unlock new value in the subsea and subsurface arena. By focusing efforts on digital solutions that scale across assets and installations it is easy to expand and integrate Ormen Lange into the existing onshore dynamic digital twin developed at Nyhamna gas processing facility, resulting in the first-ever fully integrated reservoir to the market digital twin. Partnership development Nyhamna Dynamic Digital Twin has been in operation and evolving continuously through monthly product releases In October 2019, Norske Shell joined forces with Kongsberg Digital to operationalise an ‘asset of the future’ through a partnership development of the Nyhamna Dynamic Digital Twin, using Kongsberg Digital’s Kognitwin Energy solution. The twin was deployed and up and running by the end of the year and since January 2020 the Nyhamna Dynamic Digital Twin has been in operation and evolving continuously through monthly product releases, focusing on safe, effective and integrated work processes and optimisation of production and energy use. With Nyhamna having paved the way, the decision was made to expand the collaboration with another digital twin of the related Ormen Lange deepwater gas field, which feeds gas to Nyhamna. Integration of digital twins "With Ormen Lange, we are very proud to have been awarded the contract for the development of a second digital twin for Norske Shell. This is a direct result of our successful collaboration around the Nyhamna dynamic digital twin." "We would particularly like to highlight a strong core product, Kognitwin Energy, rapid deployments, and fast time to value as unique differentiators in this ongoing project. Now, we are eager to help Norske Shell realise the full potential of their assets through integration of these two digital twins," says Hege Skryseth, President of Kongsberg Digital and EVP KONGSBERG. About Ormen Lange digital twin Ormen Lange digital twin comprises primarily data integrations and visualisation of subsea 3D models The first version of the Ormen Lange digital twin comprises primarily data integrations and visualisation of subsea 3D models including production and MEG pipelines, well surface locations and well-bore paths, seabed bathymetry data detailed around the production templates, built documentation and drawings, real-time data from DCS and PI and much more. For disciplines and teams across the initial Ormen Lange user base - like Subsea Maintenance, Wells, Flow Assurance, Production Technology, Reservoir Engineering, Process Engineering and Operations - the twin provides unified data for everyone to access across the same work surface. This is the starting point of a longer journey where Kongsberg Digital and Norske Shell will continue to develop valuable features and target specific use cases to enable user groups, disciplines and teams with new ways of working. Collaboration "Digital twins are a technology for people. The partnership model, combining Kongsberg Digital’s digital capabilities with our own employee’s expertise in the operations and maintenance domain, has been very effective in delivering use cases that let our teams collaborate better and become more effective. This, in turn, enables us to save costs and optimise production whilst improving safety and environmental impact," says Rolf Einar Sæter, Digitalisation Manager in Norske Shell. The first version of the Ormen Lange digital twin was released to users in Norske Shell last month.
Kognitwin Energy is Kongsberg Digital’s digital twin Software-as-a-Service platform that enables operators to integrate and contextualise data from their IT and OT systems and enable advanced process and flow simulation to drive higher degrees of asset performance and collaboration. Open ecosystem Kognitwin Energy enables an open ecosystem of applications through an API-driven integration approach Operators apply Kognitwin Energy to drive a strategic transformation agenda that allows their workforce to reimagine how they work, through digital means. In addition to data, workflows and simulation, Kognitwin Energy enables an open ecosystem of applications through an API-driven integration approach, rooted in a principle of open standards and democratised innovation. Integration Kongsberg Digital is building on its existing experience from working with ExxonMobil, where it among other items has deployed real-time dynamic simulation models leveraging its key dynamic simulation technologies K-Spice Dynamic Process Simulation Platform and LedaFlow Advanced Transient Multiphase Flow Simulator. Hege Skryseth, President of Kongsberg Digital adds “Kongsberg Digital is extremely pleased to be building on our existing relationship with ExxonMobil as users of Kognitwin Energy, and we fully embrace the opportunity to work together on digital enablement of operations in Guyana.”
