Wärtsilä Water & Waste, a unit within the technology group - Wärtsilä, has reportedly outperformed standard wastewater treatment expectations in one of the planet's most scrutinised marine settings.
Independent data from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) validates the superior performance of Wärtsilä's Hamworthy membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems.
The 2024 Alaska cruise season saw fourteen vessels outfitted with the Hamworthy MBR systems attaining a 98.2% compliance rate as per the DEC's public testing programme. This stands significantly above the fleet-wide average compliance rate of 94.7% and notably higher than the 90.8% average for systems from other manufacturers.
Maritime environmental compliance standards
Alaska's DEC mandates that all large cruise ships in the region collect treated wastewater samples for extensive laboratory testing, with the results openly published for each vessel. This rigorous scrutiny forms part of one of the most stringent and transparent maritime environmental regulatory frameworks globally.
"Alaska’s Environmental Compliance Report provides real-world validation of system performance,” commented Peter Satchwell, Global Sales Director at Wärtsilä Water & Waste, adding “Our MBR systems are tested under genuine operating conditions on vessels sailing in Alaskan waters – and the results speak to the reliability and consistency of our MBR solutions. This independent verification reinforces the confidence our customers place in our technology to meet the most demanding environmental standards."
Enhanced monitoring and support
Wärtsilä’s Hamworthy MBR technology is designed to integrate biological therapy with membrane filtration
Wärtsilä’s Hamworthy MBR technology is designed to integrate biological treatment with membrane filtration, ensuring consistent, high-quality effluent production without the need for chemical disinfectants.
Through continuous process monitoring and a digital feedback system supported by Wärtsilä's technical teams, the technology maintains performance stability across varying ships, crews, and routes.
Peter Satchwell further explained, “Independent verification builds trust. The fact that our performance is independently verified through Alaska’s open reporting system demonstrates the advantage of our design philosophy, where compliance is paramount. We are proud to have reached this high watermark for performance and to support our customers to operate safely, cleanly, and efficiently no matter where they are in the world.”
Commitment to environmental responsibility
These findings reinforce Wärtsilä Water & Waste's enduring dedication to system dependability and environmental responsibility.
The company's innovative solutions help ship operators comply with stringent discharge standards, bolstering global efforts to safeguard marine environments.
